Oral Examinations
Ideally twice a year, you'll see your dentist for a routine oral exam. This provides them the opportunity to identify any oral health issues and develop a plan to treat them accordingly.
During your exam, your dentist will closely check the health of your teeth, gums, jaw and bite. Exams can also include an oral cancer screening, dental x-rays, and any other diagnostic procedures that may be required.
Oral Cancer Screening
Any part of your mouth or surrounding tissues can become infected with oral cancer. Your dentist will inspect your face, neck, throat, tongue, lips, gums, and tissues during your exam for any signs of oral cancer, which can be difficult to detect with the naked eye.
Oral Health Care at Home
Keeping your smile healthy between dental appointments is key to great oral health. Remember to brush twice daily for two minutes each time, and floss at least once per day.
Hygiene Cleaning
The deep cleaning of your teeth and gums is an integral part to your routine dental appointment. Your dental hygienist will perform this critical task before or after your exam to prevent and treat disease.
To start, an ultrasonic scaler (cavitron) will be used in conjunction with hand scaling to eliminate any plaque buildup or tartar. Next, the hygienist will use a polisher topped with coarse toothpaste to clear away any remaining plaque or stains. This is followed with a thorough flossing of your teeth and gums.
Fluoride Treatment
If your dentist deems you or your child to be at high risk for tooth decay, a fluoride treatment may be recommended. This natural mineral can help to rebuild the minerals in your tooth enamel to prevent or reverse tooth decay.
